Strength of the Woman Mural
Artists J. Nicole Hatfield and Steven Grounds collaborated on a Native American mural that now adorns the Sheridan Avenue underpass in Bricktown. The south side of this Oklahoma City underpass was inspired by a Native poem, "See the Woman," representing the strength and value of women in Native American culture. Hatfield's portion of the mural features historic portraits of Native women painted in subtle black and white colors. Grounds' half of the mural features instead vibrant colors as part of current-day Native women's portraits. This "Strength of the Woman" mural also includes one portrait with elements from both artists, merging the stories of past and present Native women in several brushstrokes.
