Cafe Kacao
Sample the flavors of Guatemala at Cafe Kacao in Oklahoma City. Historically, Guatemalan food is based on the native flavors of corn, chocolate, tomatoes and vanilla, incorporated with what the Spanish conquistadors brought to the Americas centuries ago: beef, rice, garlic, onions and wine. These combined flavors compose the delectable dishes that make Cafe Kacao a dining hotspot in Oklahoma City. In fact, this eatery has become so popular that it was named the No. 1 brunch spot in the country by Yelp in 2023.
For breakfast, try the Tikal plate - scrambled eggs with thinly sliced grilled flank steak and Guatemalan sausage, then served with refried black beans and fried plantains. For something sweeter, order the French toast, which comes topped with whipped cream cheese, strawberries, apples, bananas and powdered sugar.
Lunch at Cafe Kacao is served with a cup of the soup of the day. Choose from entrees like carne adobada, which is thinly sliced pork loin marinated overnight with achiote, garlic, pepper and Guatemalan spices. Try the flautas, corn tortillas filled with chicken picadillo, rolled and deep fried, then served on a bed of lettuce, sour cream, red salsa and avocado cream and topped with parsley.
Top off your meal with a traditional Guatemalan dessert like molette, which is fried bread stuffed with “manjar blanco” (sweet milk pudding) floating in a cinnamon and brown sugar sauce. Kacao plantains are also a tasty treat, with fried plantains on a sweet chocolate mole sauce, topped with sesame seeds.
