Choctaw Nation Museum
Choctaw Nation Museum
Preserving Choctaw culture, history and heritage, the Choctaw Nation Museum features a variety of exhibits for guests to explore, including traditional Choctaw pottery pieces, unique vintage clothing items and historic tribal documents in the same building that housed the Choctaw Nation’s government from 1884-1907.
Built in 1884, the museum – also known as the original Council House -- was once the capitol building for the Choctaw Nation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Five beautiful acres of museum grounds are canopied by large shade trees where Choctaw stickball, weddings, social dancing and inter-tribal pow-wows take place during an annual Labor Day Festival.
Peruse the Trail of Tears Exhibit on your self-guided tour and check out the Choctaw History, Culture and Family Life Exhibits on display throughout the museum. A special memorial exhibit honors Choctaw Code Talkers and the Art Gallery features work by Choctaw artists like the River Cane Family mural. At the end of your visit, you’ll discover authentic Choctaw art, pottery and jewelry available to purchase from the museum’s gift shop.
