Edmond History Museum
Step inside the Edmond History Museum and you're immediately surrounded by the community's rich history. The museum is housed in the former armory of the 179th Infantry, 45th Division of the Oklahoma National Guard, and built from historic, native sandstone in 1936 by the WPA.
Permanent collections are arranged in chronological order from pre-historic prairies to 1888 when Edmond was a coal and water stop for the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe Railroad. View exhibits detailing the Land Run of 1889 and the town's expansive growth in the 1900s through the present. Learn about Edmond's most illustrious citizens, including Olympic Gold Medal winner Shannon Miller, as well as exciting temporary and traveling exhibitions.
Adults are free to browse and read historical information about Edmond's history, while children can enjoy hands-on play in the museum's Children's Learning Center. Historical resources include the museum collection with over 35,000 artifacts and historic photographs, a non-circulating research library with books and documents related to Edmond and Oklahoma, newspaper on microfilm, and genealogy volunteers who can help with family research.
Learn about the earliest one-room schoolhouse in the Oklahoma Territory at the nearby 1889 Territorial Schoolhouse. This formative schoolhouse helped shape and create the beginnings of higher education in the region and other educational facilities. The 1889 Territorial Schoolhouse is located on the corner of Second and Boulevard in Edmond.
The museum also includes the Rodkey House Event and Education Annex. Built in 1900 by Isaac and Catherine Rodkey - owners of the Rodkey Mill and Rodkey’s Best Flour - the Victorian Painted Lady home was donated to the City of Edmond and moved to this location in 2007. The Rodkey House is available for private rentals for parties, receptions, small weddings and meetings. The house will also be open for an annual Victorian tea and a Christmas event.
