Oklahoma County is located in central Oklahoma. In the early 1800s, explorers and traders traveled through the area. Even before the 1889 Land Run, the Southern Kansas Railway was established in Oklahoma County. At statehood in 1907, Guthrie was chosen as the state capital. However, in 1910, state residents voted to move the capital to Oklahoma City, and the Oklahoma State Capitol Building was completed in 1917. In the early 1900s, the county economy grew and prospered, with expanding manufacturing, agriculture and oil and gas industries.
