Set in 1905 New York City, the play follows Esther, a Black seamstress who is in great demand for the fine intimate apparel she creates for clients. While she provides joy to people from all walks of life, Esther herself is lonely. She finds herself in correspondence with a Caribbean man who persuades her to marry him, though Esther has her heart set on a Hasidic shopkeeper in town.
