You'll find the Colbert Ferry Historic Marker is nestled at the intersection of Moore Ave. and Burney St. in Colbert. As you stand before the humble marker, know you are taking in a piece of travel history. In 1853, the Chickasaw Nation granted permission to Benjamin Franklin Colbert to operate a ferry across the Red River to accommodate travelers on the Texas Road. With his house serving as the station, he provided food for travelers. Confederate forces also frequently used the ferries. After the Civil War ended, the ferry profited from the cattle drives that originated from Texas.
