You might miss the Chouteau’s Post Marker in Salina unless you know where to look. The marker is nestled to the left of the Salina Senior Citizens Center and a short stroll off the Salina City Park Walking Trail. The marker lends a voice to the history of the area.

In 1796, Jean Pierre Chouteau, a French trader from St. Louis, established a trading post at the junction of the Neosho River and Saline Creek in order to do business with the Osage. This became one of the oldest permanent American settlements in the state, according to the marker's inscription.

Chouteau’s Post Marker is neighbors with the J.B. Milam Highway marker, which was named in honor of Jess Bartley Milam, Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1941 until his death in 1949.
