McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area Trail System
McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area Trail System
Located on the northeast corner of McGee Creek State Park in Atoka, the McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area Trail System is a hidden gem with over 25 miles of hiking trails. The area doesn't allow any motorized vehicles and is a strict "quiet-water zone." To hike, mountain bike or ride your horse through this trail system, you must register for a permit from the Natural Scenic Recreation Area office. Each permit is free and helps keep track of the number of trail users. This beautiful, nearly untouched area is also teeming with wildlife, so keep your cameras ready.
Little Bugaboo to Whiskey Flats Campground to South Rim Trail (GPS 34 23.359, w 95 49.515): From the trailhead located just behind the Natural Scenic Recreation Area office, walk, bike or ride north for just over two miles. Ahead, you'll come to the Whiskey Flats Trail, which will lead you to the Whiskey Flats Campground. This peaceful place overlooks McGee Creek Lake and is a nice spot to eat a picnic lunch or even pitch a tent for the night. After your stint at the campground, return to the trail where you originated. After one mile you'll come to the intersection of the Little Bugaboo and South Rim Trails. Continue southeast on the South Rim Trail where you'll stay for the remainder of the hike.
Box Spring Campground is centrally located in the McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area, and there are a number of other hikes from the area. From the campground, hikers can head north for two and a half miles to the Hunter's Cabin Trail. From there, you can also go another two and a half miles west on the North Rim Trail to Wildcat Canyon.
Please call the office at 580-889-5822 for groups of 10 or more, or to inquire about Use Permits for groups. The Use Permit is different than the permit located at the Rangers' house.
