Located in northwestern Oklahoma, Ellis County formed in 1907 at statehood and was named after Albert H. Ellis, a member of Oklahoma’s 1906 Constitutional Convention. In the late 1800s, part of the county served as a transportation route for the military as well as civilians. The Southern Kansas Railway, built in Ellis County from 1886 to 1887, cut across the county and went into Texas. The Shattuck Windmill Museum and Park showcases rare and restored windmills from 1870 to 1970. Lake Vincent near Arnett offers fishing and picnic areas.
