Tucked in the rolling prairie of cross-timber country, Sulphur, Oklahoma is known as the gateway to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. One of three areas administered by the National Park Service, it was known to Native Americans as "the land of rippling waters" due to the mineral waters, streams, lakes and swimming holes crisscrossing the area. Classic examples of National Park Service and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) work are found in the Platt Historic District, and the Travertine Nature Center serves as the park's main educational center. Step inside the nature center for features on exhibit dioramas, bookstore finds and daily ranger-led programs. For an in-depth exploration of Sulphur history, tour the Arbuckle Historical Museum. To unwind and indulge, head to the Artesian Hotel, Casino & Sole'renity Spa, or relax at the Echo Canyon Spa Resort.
