Oklahoma History Center
Located on 18 acres across from the Oklahoma State Capitol, the past comes alive at the Oklahoma History Center. As the state's museum of history, this Smithsonian-quality museum highlights the many people and stories that make Oklahoma truly unique. From oil and gas to aviation, the Dust Bowl to space exploration, tornadoes to the Land Run and Native American Indians to Route 66, there’s a compelling story around every corner.
With five permanent galleries and a special exhibits hall, explore more than 200 hands-on interactives and 50 subjects that tell the stories of Oklahoma and its people. This 215,000 square-foot learning center also includes a Research Center and hosts special events that appeal to all ages. From Civil War Day to rockabilly concerts, there is always something to enjoy at the Oklahoma History Center.
OneOK Gallery presents a broad representation of past and current American Indian experiences with artifacts, tribal music, photographs, Indian art and oral histories from the indigenous people of Oklahoma. Learn about Oklahoma's early history from settlement to statehood at the Sam Noble Gallery, then move on to the Kerr-McGee Gallery for African-American history in Oklahoma, featuring information, artifacts and recreated locations related to important figures in the community and civil rights history. The E.L. & Thelma Gaylord Special Exhibits Gallery focuses on Oklahomans who pioneered in both aviation, and the US air and space program.
After visiting the galleries, be sure to visit the gift shop, stocked with items from local artists, educational games, souvenirs and much more. Those working on family genealogy will also want to stop by the extensive research library and archives on site.
Conveniently located in the Capitol Complex, the Oklahoma History Center is adjacent to the State Capitol and the Governor’s residence, both within easy driving or walking distance.
