Located in southwestern Oklahoma, Greer County is named after former Texas Lieutenant Governor John A. Greer. From 1860 to 1896, the State of Texas claimed this land and parts of the surrounding counties as Greer County, Texas. After a Supreme Court ruling in 1896, the area was assigned to Oklahoma Territory by the United States Government and Old Greer County was eventually divided into present day Greer County and portions of Harmon, Jackson and Beckham counties. Early trails in the area included the Great Spanish Road, the Western Trail and Camp Supply Road. In 1900, the railroad moved in: first the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway laid track in Greer County, then the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway. The Old Greer County Museum & Pioneer Hall of Fame, located in Mangum, showcases the history of the area with artifacts of pioneer life. Visitors to Greer County will also enjoy strolling along the streets of downtown Mangum's Artists Alley or discovering the Peace on the Plains granite marker, which honors the first peace meeting between the United States and the Plains Indians in Oklahoma.
In 2000, census records showed 6,061 people living in Greer County. Countless resources exist for tracing genealogy in Greer County including legal records, cemetery records and a local genealogical society. For more information about genealogy in Greer County, resources are provided below.
