When an 1891 flash flood threatened Frazer, the town moved to higher ground and renamed itself “Altus,” the Latin word for “high place.” Today, Altus is also home to high-flying planes and the Altus Air Force Base, a major training location for the United States Air Force.
The beauty of Lake Altus-Lugert is breathtaking, so head out to Altus and take advantage of all the opportunities for boating, camping, wildlife watching and beautiful scenery at Quartz Mountain. At the Altus City Reservoir, you can even try your hand at disc golf and fish for channel catfish and largemouth bass.
During your Altus visit, satisfy your need for speed at the annual Rock-N-Rumble Car Show & Cruise, see impressive Western feats at the Great Plains Stampede Rodeo or get in touch with Southwest Oklahoma history at the Museum of the Western Prairie.
