The Fort Gibson Historic Site invites history buffs to their "Third Indian Home Guard" Living History Program. On Saturdays throughout February and March, the Fort Gibson Historic Site will step back in time and living history actors will demonstrate aspects of the soldiers' daily lives such as firearm, uniform, and equipment maintenance. The Third Indian Home Guard had two pieces of gear that made them unique—their rifles and hats. These soldiers were issued Hardee hats rather than the usual kepi hats and they carried the model 1841 rifle, also known as the "Mississippi rifle." Learn more about the daily lives of these soldiers at this unique program at the Fort Gibson Historic Site.
