Okfuskee County, located in east-central Oklahoma, was named after a former Creek town in Alabama. The Creek Indians moved into Okfuskee County in the 1830s and established towns there. During the Civil War, a Confederate headquarters was established in the area. At the turn of the 20th century, two railroads were introduced in Okfuskee County: the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway and the Fort Smith and Western Railroad. The Okfuskee County History Center located in Okemah features exhibits and displays about Okfuskee County’s past. In Boley, the Boley Historical Museum showcases the town’s history.
