In the late 1930s, FDR’s whistle-stop tour paused long enough in Vinita to introduce President Roosevelt to the majestic Grand River, which soon-after brought about the construction of Pensacola Dam…and by the end of the summer of 1940, Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees was born.With its 46,500 surface acres of water, 1,300 miles of shoreline, and numerous marinas, located smack-dab in the middle of Oklahoma’s “Green Country”, Grand Lake is the “grande dame” of Oklahoma lakes.
