Comanche County, named for the Comanche tribe, was created in 1901 when the area was opened to settlers. Fort Sill, established in 1869 and located near Lawton, is the county seat. Fort Sill remains a working U.S. Army post and the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark Museum located there details the history of the fort in exhibits and restored buildings. The scenic Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is also located in Comanche County.
