Choctaw County was created in 1907 and named after the Choctaw tribe of the area. The county seat of Hugo is also known as "Circus City U.S.A." in remembrance of the large number of circus performers that would winter there. Visitors to Choctaw County can visit the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in particular the section of the cemetery named Showmen's Rest, to witness the performers' final resting place. Choctaw County is also home to Fort Towson, established in 1824 and the second oldest fort in Indian Territory. Today, visitors can tour the grounds of the fort and explore further exhibits available at the Fort Towson Historical Society Museum. Hugo Lake Park and Raymond Gary State Park offer both recreational activities and accommodations.

In 2000, census records showed 15,342 people living in Choctaw County. Countless assets exist for tracing genealogy in Choctaw County including legal records, cemetery records and a local genealogy society. Valuable resources for researching genealogy in Choctaw County are provided below.
